Like The Sound and the Fury and its other predecessors, Faulkners new work won only occasional, if intensely felt, praisefor its moral vision, and for what Mitchells home bastion, the Atlanta Journal, recognized as the first real step forward in the novel form since Remembrance of Things Past. Fourteen years before Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, fifteen years short of the works reissue as a Modern Library classic, Absalom, Absalom! sold about seven thousand copies, and then disappeared from the shelves
