Daphne tangutica (Retusa Group) winter interest serviceablePurple black flower buds open in mid spring to offer fragrant and violet tinged white flowers. Their fragrance has none of the sweet lemon vanilla scents of Daphne odora but is somewhat like a soft Indian incensevery alluring. Also unlike the D. odora, the D. tanguticas can tolerate some drought (once established). Slow growing and so worth it, forms a regular mound of small, thick, forest green, evergreen leaves.
