When a Job Select item is played, it spawns a 1/1 Hero Token and the item equips itself to it, usually providing a stat buff and a special ability
Other than that, the severe constraints of Excruciator's mana cost limit what you can do with this manabase for some metagames, you can consider adding a Demolition Field or Cavern of Souls, but in general we felt it was much better to optimize for consistency casting early interaction (mainly Duress and postboard Cut Down)
Think of it like this: Dredge decks need to dump cards in the graveyard to trigger effects like Narcomoeba, so self-mill more or less equals drawing cards
