This commander lets you cantrip on an early turn, then return later as a permanent engine, which is a really strong play pattern in longer games
It's a very Commander-esque ability in hindsight, but the design team didn't even think of a Commander format at the time, and they wanted people to build decks around it, so it was intentionally a non-legendary creature so they could take multiple copies out on the battlefield
